Built along the coast of Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, the Asia New Bay Area is rapidly emerging as a cultural center and hub in the global 5G AIoT industry. It’s also home to the Cijin-Gushan Ferry, which every day carries nearly 20,000 passengers between Kaohsiung city proper and Cijin Island. In order to increase the ferry’s reach and keep pace with technology trends, the Kaohsiung City Shipping Company plans to run a new Smart Ferry route between Cijin, Gushan, and Zhanerku. These Smart Ferries will be equipped with interactive technology that can inform and entertain passengers during the journey.
- High-Brightness Transparent MicroLED Displays
- Perfect Interactive Window Solution
- Rain-and-Shine Weatherproofing
- AI-Powered Interactive Content
- Proven Reliability and Extended Services
How to provide useful information while still letting ferry riders enjoy the exquisite scenery of the Asia New Bay Area? This was the challenge facing the Kaohsiung City Shipping Company. The potential solutions were many but one in particular stood out: transparent interactive displays built into the ferry’s windows. This solution, however, posed many challenges. The Cijin area is no stranger to sunshine, so see-through in-window displays would need to produce enough brightness to remain crisp, clear, and legible even in the middle of the day. Being installed on a ferry also meant that the displays would need to be not only weatherproof against the rain, but also able to withstand the potential corrosive effect of high salinity seawater. And because the displays would be consumer-facing devices, they needed to be easy to install, clean, and maintain in order to maximize both uptime and customer satisfaction.
For these transparent in-window displays, the Kaohsiung City Shipping Company needed a supplier with experience working on custom projects in challenging environments. Given the uniqueness of the project, the Kaohsiung City Shipping Company chose AUO, a professional in the field of display technology for over 25 years. Having over a decade of experience with MicroLED technology, which is especially suitable for transparent displays, AUO possessed the technical knowhow that was needed to complete a transparent display project on this scale.
AUO’s transparent MicroLED displays can be spliced together seamlessly, with no limitations on the number or arrangement of panels. This makes them flexible and adaptable to meet various demands. For the Cijin-Gushan-Zhanerku Smart Ferry, the displays were installed so as to create 35- and 23-inch smart window screens, allowing passengers to absorb pertinent information while also enjoying the Asia New Bay Area’s stunning confluence of technological progress and natural beauty.
Because weather in Kaohsiung can range from hot, sunny days to heavy tropical rains, outdoor displays need to be ready for anything. AUO’s MicroLED Display technology is capable of delivering up to 3000 nits of brightness, ensuring high contrast and maximum clarity even in sunny conditions. Furthermore, to fend off the high salinity of the Asia New Bay Area’s saltwater, AUO employed novel weatherproofing technology to ensure the MicroLED Displays would be protected against ocean spray and ambient conditions over the long term.
To provide the most informative and entertaining experience for Smart Ferry passengers, AUO’s partners created a content delivery system that leverages GPS positional data and eye-movement tracking. This system delivers relevant information according to not only the current position of the ferry, but also based on the angle of a viewers’ gaze. Passengers can look through the window and experience the delight of augmented reality, as the screen updates with new information in real-time based eye movements. It’s a fully integrated information and entertainment solution that’s been realized thanks to the Asia New Bay Area’s future-forward development and AUO’s 5G AIoT knowhow.
As the Smart Ferries prepare to begin regular service on the Cijin-Gushan-Zhanerku route, the Kaohsiung City Shipping Company is excited to share this new experience with locals and tourists alike. The Smart Ferries’ modular MicroLED transparent displays are ready to deliver a fresh view of the Asia New Bay Area, one that will please ferry riders not only in the near future but for many years to come. It’s a novel experience that’s been made possible by AUO’s understanding of the latest 5G AIoT systems and deep familiarity with modular MicroLED Display technology.
